Nothing Revolutionary....

But how cool if we could find our WAY to one.

Few of My Favorite Things: The Kevin Smith Edition

Clerks will be a favorite film for life. Don't do rankings, so won't say it's Top Ten or some such thing. But it is one of the touchstones that I will always go back to to find that connection with.

Kevin Smith with his first film made him one of the top authors for my generation. The film had a huge influence on me. I was 20, in love with the indie film movement that was starting to grow, and I connected to the characters and their struggles. In some respects I was Dante.

Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma all lived up the the author that I viewed Kevin Smith as. Since then, well, since then, there have been some bumps along the road. With every new project I hear about though I get excited at the thought of returning to my love of the films of Kevin Smith, soon, the next one, this is what I say. One day this will be true.

I've sat on the stoop from Chasing Amy. I have visited his comic book store in Red Bank, New Jersey, Secret Stash, these are fun memories (all completed with my best friend Mary).

Outside of the VHS tapes of his films, the DVD's, and the memories, I have some other treasures that I hold close.

A few of his screenplays. I have two versions of Dogma yes. One was released in the UK, I had to see what the difference is, a pursuit I should revisit.

Then there are the comic books. I love these. It is about the time of year to read The Holiday Clerks.

But one of my favorite things (and not just Kevin Smith related) is the Buddy Christ.

"Snoochie Boochies."

  1. I refuse to hear your claims about Kevin Smith's supposed decline! You haven't even seen Clerks II! I won't even venture to guess the others you haven't seen! OUTRAGEOUS! Clerks II is wonderful, fun, funny and heartwarming! and I refuse to have your the sequel will ruin the first one talk! it's ridiculous, particularly if enjoy the first one as much as you say you do!

    That is all!

  2. @mfeige, hey there!

This is true, I need to see "Clerk II" you own me on that point. I won't mention my reasoning for not, since you took the air out of my sails on that. Haha. I will see it, I will.

Um, "Jersey Girls" do I need to say more? ;)

  3. Jersey Girl was certainly a mis-step and I think no one insults it more than Kevin himself. It's interesting to hear his reasoning for making it and where he think it went terribly wrong. That being say I enjoyed Jay & Silent Bob Strike back, although it is not up to par with the ones you mentioned above. I also throughly enjoyed Zack and Miri. Did you see those two?

I did see "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" when it first came out, yep and, well while better than "Jersey Girl" I really found it all sorts of terrible. It has been a while but I just remember that reaction, it was almost painful to finish. Of course this is on the heels of four great films. Have yet to see "Zack and Miri"--I will, when I first heard about it, I was excited for, but then when I started to see previews, this excitement diminished.

  5. Going in to Zack and Miri I had no idea it was a Kevin Smith film and I think I enjoyed it more for that fact, but I did enjoy it, it's very different and I think many are unfairly critical.
